What Are Superfoods?

When I am wondering about what something is I simply type it into my Google search bar.

I started with superfood and Wikipedia gave me this:

-“…a marketing term used to describe foods with supposed health benefits.”

Then to bump up the search a bit I put in what is a superfood and here is what Google’s definition was:

-“a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.”

To me these seem like to very different definitions. One seems to paint the picture of something that is just used by marketers to sell products and the other seems to show something that is going to be truly great for your health. The real definition probably lies somewhere in between the two as I’m sure anything touted as a superfood is going to fly off of the shelves. There, of course, is some credibility to this and more people should be eating some of these foods and then there is just the fly off of the shelves part of it. The bottom line of the companies selling them is all that matters in this case.

My Definition of a Superfood:

-“A food that is beneficial for YOUR health.”

Sure this makes it a pretty broad definition, but if a food is not right for you then it cannot be very super for you either. This being said even if something is a so called superfood, it cannot be one if your body does not tolerate it well. Anything that clouds your thinking, hampers your digestion or doesn’t leave you feeling strong and energetic is not going to be a superfood for you.

A few examples for you…

I have not heard an orange called a superfood before, however it is something that I feel great when I eat. I do not care what is said about it, as long as I get a good organic orange (balanced with some fat and protein) I am on cloud nine. That is all that matters. On the flip side when I eat broccoli I do not do as well. It does not matter how it is cooked or even raw. I get bloated and have gas, but I love broccoli as a food. Many would argue that broccoli is a very healthy food, but I just don’t feel good when I eat it.

Getting back to my definition of superfood, which takes marketing and supposed benefits out of it, all that matters is how the food works for you. This is all that really should matter when considering if a food is healthy or not

Begin to use this to find your superfoods. Do not think that you have to go out and try something crazy because it is all of a sudden being marketed like crazy, but do not overlook something because of its marketing either. It might be just want you needed to get your health back on track.
